A Light for the Next Step
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Anxiety often behaves like a projector, casting shadow-filled 'what-ifs' onto our future. It pushes us to try and see ten miles down a dark road, demanding answers for tomorrow before we've even finished today.
But look closely at how the Psalmist describes God's Word: it is a 'lamp' to our feet, not a spotlight on the horizon. In the ancient world, a foot lamp was a small clay vessel that cast just enough light to illuminate the single, next step directly in front of the traveler. To go forward safely, they had to walk at a trustful, steady pace—relying on the light as they moved.
God does not always reveal the entire destination or the solution to every future difficulty, but He promises to show us the very next step. When we worry about the vast unknowns, the Lord invites us to look down at where He has placed us right now and walk faithfully through this hour, knowing He goes with us.
If you are feeling overwhelmed by the weight of a long journey, remember that grace is given daily (). Trust that His light is always enough for the step you are taking today.
Pray
Father, when anxiety tries to overwhelm me with tomorrow's unknowns, help me to ground my thoughts in Your presence today. Give me the trust to walk in the light of Your Word, taking only the next right step. Keep my heart steady in Your grace. Amen.
Reflect & discuss
What is one 'what-if' about the future that has been causing you anxiety this week? How can you trust God with just the next faithful step in that situation?
Bring this to your tether partner or small group this week.
