If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Confession can feel frightening. We worry that if we're honest about what we've done, we'll be rejected. John says the opposite is true: honesty opens the door to forgiveness. Look at the two words John uses to describe God: "faithful and just." Faithful means God keeps His promises — He has said He will forgive, and He will. Just might surprise us. Why would justice lead to forgiveness? Because Jesus has already paid for our sin on the cross (). Forgiving those who come to Him isn't God ignoring wrong; it is God honoring what Jesus did. And He doesn't stop at forgiving. He "cleanses us from all unrighteousness." All of it. There is no stain too deep, no pattern too old. Confession is simply agreeing with God about what's true — naming the sin rather than hiding or excusing it. You can do that right now, quietly. It can also help to confess to a trusted believer (). Sin loses much of its power when it's brought into the light. You don't have to carry guilt that Jesus has already carried for you.
