Nothing Can Separate Us
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Paul piles up every threat he can think of — death and life, spiritual powers, the present and the future, height and depth — and then says none of it can cut us off from God's love. Then, just in case he missed something, he adds "nor any other creature." Nothing in all creation.
Many of us live as though God's love is fragile: strong on our good days, thin on our bad ones. Paul says it rests somewhere much more secure — "in Christ Jesus our Lord." Our hold on God may be weak, but His hold on us is not. The love doesn't depend on how tightly we grip it.
That doesn't mean life will be painless. Just a few verses earlier, Paul lists trouble, hardship, persecution, and danger (). Followers of Jesus face all of these. The promise is not that hard things won't come. It is that they cannot separate us from Him.
If you've wondered whether you've gone too far, failed too often, or doubted too much — hear this verse again. Nothing can separate you from the love of God that is in Christ.
You are held.
Pray
God, when I feel far from You, remind me that nothing can separate me from Your love in Jesus. Help me rest in being held.
Reflect & discuss
When is it hardest for you to believe God still loves you?
Bring this to your tether partner or small group this week.
